The standard voltage for the telephone system is 48 volts DC. Ringing voltage is much higher, around 90 volts AC at a low frequency.

In practice the ringing voltage can drop a fair bit in wiring, and phones are expected to still be able to ring at somewhat lower voltages, typically as low as 60VAC.
